EV chargepoint and infrastructure grants for landlords

The grants provide residential and commercial landlords, including social housing providers, funding to install electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints and relating supporting infrastructure in rental and leasehold properties.

Summary

There are 2 grants you can get for installing chargepoints for electric vehicles at a property you own: an electric vehicle chargepoint grant (EV chargepoint grant) and an electric vehicle infrastructure grant (EV infrastructure grant).

 

An EV chargepoint grant gives you money off the cost of installing an electric vehicle chargepoint socket. You can get either £350 or 75% off the cost to buy and install a socket, whichever amount is lower. You can receive up to 200 grants a year for residential properties, and a further 100 for commercial properties.

 

An EV infrastructure grant gives you money off the cost of wider building and installation work that’s needed to install multiple chargepoint sockets. The work can be for sockets you want to install now and in the future. For example, an EV infrastructure grant can cover things like wiring and posts. You can get up to £30,000 or 75% off the cost of the work and up to £500 per charge point. The amount depends on how many parking spaces the work covers. You can receive up to 30 grants a year for installing infrastructure in residential carparks.

Eligibility

You can apply for the electric vehicle chargepoint (EV chargepoint) or infrastructure (EV infrastructure) grant

if you’re a:

  • landlord with property to let

  • right to manage (RTM) company

  • residents’ management company (RMC)

  • company or person owning the freehold of a property that is let or leased

  • company owning a building’s common areas, including shareholders who are the leaseholders

  • property factor in Scotland

  • private registered provider of social housing (PRP)

  • public sector organisation - for example government departments, local councils, the armed forces or the NHS and emergency services

  • charity that manages or owns residential property

  • You must be a business registered at Companies House. If not, you must be VAT registered with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

 

If you are a registered social housing provider in England or a registered Property Factor in Scotland, you may also apply.

Property requirements

Your property must be in the UK. You cannot apply for this grant if you live in the Channel Islands or Isle of Man.

 

You can apply for: -

  • flats and houses

  • apartment blocks

  • commercial properties

 

If you’re letting out a commercial property, the chargepoint can only be used by the building’s staff and vehicles. It cannot be used by members of the public.

 

Your parking space

Each parking space you’re applying to install a chargepoint at must be:

  • off-street, private and clearly defined - it does not have to be part of the property

  • accessible to your tenant

  • owned by you, or be one you have the legal right to

 

Extra requirements for an EV infrastructure grant

 

If you’re applying for an EV infrastructure grant, you must:

  • be using it for a property with multiple homes - for example an apartment block, or estate with buildings that share a car park

  • be installing at least one chargepoint socket as part of the work

  • carry out work on at least 5 parking spaces, so they either have chargepoint sockets or are ready to have them installed in the future

 

Other

OZEV approved installers must be used for the work

OZEV approved equipment must be used for the work

Before you apply for a grant you must:

  • complete any necessary upgrades to the building’s electrical supply

  • arrange regular maintenance checks of the chargepoints

  • decide how the electricity and running costs will be paid

  • make sure the chargepoints are accessible

  • update your property’s risk assessment to include the chargepoints

 

Contact an installer

You must use an OZEV-authorised installer. There are different approved installers for residential properties and approved installers for commercial properties.

 

Choose a chargepoint model

You should only install OZEV-approved chargepoint models.

There are different approved chargepoint models for residential properties and commercial properties.

How to apply

 

Create a landlord account to apply.

You will need:

  • an email address

  • a UK mobile phone to get a security code

  • a Companies House company registration number or a VAT registration number

 

If you’re a linked enterprise, you must apply using the company registration number of your controlling company.

 

To initiate a claim, you should include in your application:

  • one address

  • one installer

  • your installer’s OZEV installer number

  • how many parking spaces the work covers if you’re applying for the electric vehicle infrastructure grant (EV infrastructure grant)

 

Your installer will then complete your claim

You must apply for residential and commercial properties separately.

You can apply for multiple sockets at the same address.

If you’re using more than one installer or applying for more than one address, submit a separate application for each one.
